What’s the hype about telomeres?
In 2009, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to three physiologists; Carol Greiner, Elizabeth Blackburn, and Jack Szostak, for the discovery of how cell chromosomes are protected against breakdown by telomeres, and the enzyme that builds telomere DNA to be telomerase.
What this meant was that a mechanism had been discovered that explained how cells age and how to prevent it. This is one of the greatest anti-aging discoveries in the history of medicine – if telomeres shorten, cells age; conversely, if telomerase activity is high then telomere length is maintained, and the cellular aging and breakdown is delayed.
This award winning discovery has led to an enormous amount of research into the development of therapeutic strategies to increase telomerase activity and what lifestyles and/or environmental factors positively or negatively affect telomeres.
